2014 Plano Middle School All Region Trumpet Etudes

I just recorded the audition etudes for the Plano middle schoolers.  These are the four etudes for Texas Region 25 this year.  This year is slightly different.  There are four shorter etudes this year and two will be chosen for phase one and the other two will be the selections for phase two.  There will be no cuts in either phase.  My tempos are announced in the recordings and marked below as well.

Be sure to subscribe while you're here for updates.  I'll be recording excerpts of these etudes with practicing suggestions and posting them here.  You can also subscribe to the podcast to stay up to date with the recordings.

If you don't have a copy of these etudes you can download one here.

Getchell First Book of Practical Studies

I've wanted to do this for a long time.  I picked up a Zoom iQ5 Audio Recorder for my iPhone from Amazon this week.  I'm extremely happy with it so far.  I can record a clip in the middle of or between lessons very easily, with good quality and upload from the phone straight to Soundcloud.  From there it's a piece of cake to embed the code on the site here.  I plan on having the First Getchell Book finished in a day or two and the Second Book finished next week.

There are plenty of resources for professionals and older students looking for study recordings but not so much for beginners and very young players.  I plan on making a small dent in that with Simple Trumpet.

This playlist is now complete.  You'll find all 64 ´etudes from the first book below.

I highly recommend to Zoom iQ5.  It's Awesome.

SFA Band Camp 2014 7th & 8th Grade Trumpet Études

I made these recordings today for my students going to the middle school band camp at SFA next week.  For more info about the camps at SFA visit their website here.  My students always have a great time there.  It's definitely one the Texas summer band camps worth giving a look.

Shadowcatcher by Eric Ewazen

This recording is from a live performance with the USAF Heritage of America Brass Quintet accompanied by the USAF Heritage of America Band.  I'm pretty sure this was in late 1999 or early 2000.  The Piece is "Shadowcather" by Eric Ewazen for brass quintet with wind ensemble accompaniment.

The trumpets are myself and Michael Huff.  Jemmie Robertson is playing trombone, Phil Burke the tuba and David Crites on horn.  All are great players and we had an intense time working together.

We had performed this every other night on tour and I remembered it going very well.  I reached out a few years back to the former audio tech of the band to see if he might be able to get me a copy of one of the tour recordings.  Graciously he found a recording and sent it my way.  It wasn't one of the tour recordings, it was one from a performance at an MENC conference a couple of days later.  I was bummed because I had remember that performance being a tough night for me.  Sometimes the trumpet is like a nice old friend and can anticipate your every move.  This was not such a night.

Listening to this so many years removed it doesn't seem nearly as painful as I had remembered and I'm glad to have it.  Either way it was a lot of fun playing and seemed like a good first recording to toss up here.

I hope you enjoy it!
